Kansas Road Scholar Program
|
To enhance the knowledge of general public works maintenance and construction methods, safety practices, and local government organization as it applies to the direct delivery of quality public service.
To provide a comprehensive technical skills program and recognition for participation in that program.
Road Scholar certificates are awarded to individuals who participate in all Technical Skills courses within a five-year period.

Culvert and Drainage Workshop
(approximately 6 hours of instruction offered by Kansas LTAP)
Length: A minimum of four hours of instruction. Currently this is a six hour
class
Objective:
Instructor Info: Jay Jordan, a very experienced civil engineer – retired from FHWA and currently an ATSSA instructor
Presentation Frequency: To be presented at least every other year.
Risk and Liability Issues
Length: A minimum of four hours of instruction. Currently this is a six hour
class
Objective:
Instructor Info: Tom Mulinazzi, KU transportation engineer and Vicky Johnson, KDOT attorney.
Presentation Frequency: To be presented at least every other year.
Work Zone and Travel Control Safety
Length: A minimum of three hours of instruction.
Objective:
Instructor Info: Tom Mulinazzi, KU transportation engineer.
Presentation Frequency: To be presented at least every other year.
Snow and Ice Control
Length: A minimum of four hours of instruction. Currently this is a six hour
class.
Objective:
Instructor Info: Jay Jordan, a very experienced civil engineer – retired from FHWA and currently an ATSSA instructor. Note: this class usually includes a KDOT District shop tour and instruction by KDOT personnel.
Presentation Frequency: To be presented at least every other year.
Gravel Road Maintainance
Length: A minimum of six hours of instruction.
Objective:
Instructor Info: Johnny Dahl, an FHWA retiree who has several years of experience training those who maintain gravel roads.
Presentation Frequency: To be presented at least every other year.
Asphalt Road/Street Maintenance
Length: A minimum of six hours of instruction.
Objective:
Instructor Info: Roger Alexander, transportation engineer and a recent KDOT retiree, and Kansas Asphalt Pavement Association identified pavement professionals from across KS.
Presentation Frequency: To be presented at least every other year.
Concrete Road/Street Maintenance
Length: A minimum of six hours of instruction.

Signing and Pavement Markings
Length: A minimum of four hours of instruction.

Instructor Info: Bobb Stokes, KSU transportation engineer.

Length: A minimum of six hours of instruction.

Instructor Info: Kansas Department of Human Resources, Kansas Workers Risk Cooperative for Counties, KDOT, Kansas law enforcement and Johnny Dahl, retired FHWA transportation engineer.

Length: A minimum of three hours of instruction.
